| America's Oldest City St. Augustine, Florida is "America's Oldest City", founded in 1565 by Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles. Today the city serves as a historical haven for travellers from around and outside the United States. Historical monuments standing in St. Augustine are the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument (a.k.a. "the fort"), the city gates (located near St. George Street), Fort Matanzas (standing just outside of town; this is the fort where several French lost their lives against the Spanish), the Fountain of Youth (where Ponce de Leon landed in Florida on 4/8/1565), and the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum.
