Daytona Beach
Daytona Beach is mainly known for the Daytona 500 that takes place annually at the Daytona International Speedway as well as its 23 miles of sparkling sand beaches situated on the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors have come to Daytona Beach since the late 1800s when northerners wanted to purchase land in the area. One of these wealthy individuals, Mathias Day, built the first hotel here in 1874. Automobile racing became popular at the turn of the 20th century (1900), and the speedway was opened in 1959. Approximately eight million visitors come to this area annually.
