| You Have Arrived In Gainesville! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
You have arrived in Gainesville, home to Florida's largest, oldest university- The University of Florida. Located in Alachua County, Gainesville has rich historical roots. Historical Overview- The fertile soils and clear lakes near Gainesville drew Timucuan Indians to the area in the sixteenth century. Hernando deSoto made his way through Alachua County while exploring the state of Florida. Alachua County was established in 1824 as quite a massive county, extending from the Florida-Georgia state line to Tampa Bay. 8,000 people were known to live in the county in 1860, though only 232 of those lived in Gainesville. Gainesville served as a main meeting place for the Confederate Army during the Civil War and was the site of two battles. After the Civil War ended and Reconstruction made its way through our state, Alachua County had 18,000 inhabitants.
