Welcome to St. Augustine!
FLORIDA GENIUS FACT: St. Augustine, Florida is known as "America's Oldest City" and though many believe this city is located in Flagler County (because of Henry Morrison Flagler, the founder of Flagler College), it is actually located in St. Johns County!

St. Augustine, founded by Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles in 1565, is a national treasure and a historical haven. St. Augustine has been through its many "battles"; it has been led by Spanish as well as British rule. St. Augustine was originally founded to provide support for the country of Spain, and it was burned to the ground on more than one occasion. The first time it burned to the ground, it was looted by Sir Francis Drake of England. The town was revolutionized in the late 1800s when the "King of the Railroad", Henry Flagler, saw promise for the town and built many resorts to make the town more appealing to the wealthy. Currently, the buildings and monuments that still stand are the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, the St. Augustine Lighthouse, the Fountain of Youth, and the Ponce de Leon Hotel, which in 1967 became Flagler College. Located to the north of St. Augustine is Fort Caroline, while Fort Matanzas is located to the south.
