Science

Mr. Jasztal, Ms. Jasztal's dad, helps the class to launch rockets every spring!

This year, we are embarking on a journey to being “sensational scientists”. As Ms. Jasztal leads us through the school year, we visit many different websites that help prepare us for experiments and tests. Sometimes we’re even experimenting online. Our websites are split into two categories- Jasztal Demonstrations and Individual Explorations. Jasztal Demonstrations are where our teacher gets on her laptop and uses her projector in front of the whole class. Visiting the site is a group effort. Individual Explorations are after Ms. Jasztal is confident we have grasped a topic. We then go off on our own and label diagrams, role play, and even try online experiments.
Our class was involved in the JASON project for the 2005-2006 school year. The theme of this year-long science unit was "Mysteries of Earth and Mars". This program was started by Dr. Robert D. Ballard, who first started his quest of exploration when he found the remains of the Titanic. Here, you can visit many interesting websites about space and geology.
Could you imagine going on a journey through your body? Clicking on the site above will mainly bring you to links, but during our unit we find out whether cardiac or skeletal muscle is stronger, whether we are eating nutritiously, put together a model of the integumentary (skin) system, and make a life-size model of the human body to label the bones in our bodies. Of course there is more, yet we cannot tell you everything just yet!
This focuses again on Earth and Mars, yet it helps us to answer some interesting questions about where we live. When we compare the geological features of Earth and Mars, we are putting reading strategies (comparing and contrasting) to use.
In Ms. Jasztal's Virtual Science Lab, you can find science project ideas as well as discover new terms, learn the steps of the Scientific Method, and possibly find a mini weekend project (like how to build and shoot a rocket in thirty minutes) that you can become involved with.
