Writing Resources

NARRATIVE- Story writing

  • Key words- Write a story
  • Example- A truck delivers a huge wooden box to your door. The box is from someone you know. On the box is a metal ring. A sign says “Pull the ring and stand back.” Before you begin writing, think about what might be inside the box. Now tell a story about what happens after you pull the ring.

    Narrative writing includes…

  • A plot
  • Characters
  • A setting
  • A solution that the characters come to
  • It doesn’t have a certain amount of paragraphs. However, you should put your writing into paragraphs when you move to a different event.

    EXPOSITORY- Explaining writing

  • Key words- Explain (to the reader of your paper)
  • Example- You have applied for someone to remodel your home, and your application has been accepted. Think of three things the remodeling crew can do to make your home a nicer place to live for you and for your family. Now explain in five paragraphs how your home can be remodeled.

    Expository writing includes…

  • Three main ideas
  • Five paragraphs- an introductory paragraph, three main ideas, and a conclusion
  • Transition words such as “first”, "to begin", “second”, "in addition", “last”, “in conclusion”

Advice on both narrative and expository:

  • Using great vocabulary is VERY important.
  • Writing to AT LEAST HALFWAY on the back page (and in the meantime, making sense) will score you at least a passing score. Writing to the end may make things even better. USE YOUR TWO PAGES.
  • Also, use at least 40 minutes to… write, edit, look at how you worded everything, check over details…
  • Remember that you can create a mood in your paper like frightening, exciting, action-packed, suspenseful… if you have a story, try to give it a “mood”.
  • Character names are cool. Names like Dr. Drill for the dentist or Principal Stern can be exciting for a narrative story.

Brilliant Language that can get someone going:

  • Trust me
  • Oh, and by the way
  • Take this into consideration
  • Believe it or not
  • I am presenting this fact
  • Understand my point of view
  • Can you believe it?
  • Right before my eyes
