WHAT'S IN THE SHOPPING BAG? [And Other Ways Companies Persuade People To Purchase!]

Purpose: How do companies persuade you to purchase new things? Well, today we are going to visit a website called Don't Buy It! as well as a few other websites.

Instructions: Visit this website to take a very short and interesting quiz. The quiz is called "What's in the Shopping Bag?". You'll guess what is REALLY in each box from the "shopping spree". Sometimes you may answer incorrectly, but you'll realize that putting more on a box than there actually is will persuade people to purchase that product.

JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT:

  • 1. Complete the quiz. What was the author's purpose of creating that website? Explain in 1-2 sentences.
  • 2. Visit this website. Why do you think a toy company may picture one toy with others that are sold seperately?
  • 3. What are a few ways in which companies can persuade you to purchase an item? [One example- A commercial can use music from a music artist a lot of people listen to. Think of other examples as well.]
  • 4. Have you ever bought a product that looked bigger or better on TV or in a magazine/newspaper/other advertisement than in real life? Explain.
  • 5. Visit this website. Just by looking at the pictures and not the information below, which one would you purchase, and why?
  • 6. For the website above (in #5), which one of the three products was the most disappointing to the people trying it out? Explain why in 2-3 sentences.
