Science is truly one of the greatest subjects to teach. You get to "uncover" mysteries through experiments and demonstrations. Even better,
you can lead a science show outside for your class and other classes, intriguing them with science magic! Between Steve Spangler's experiments
(www.stevespanglerscience.com) and interesting books like The Book of
Totally Irresponsible Science, you can definitely be on top of your game!
Melody Shaw is a fourth- and fifth-grade
science discovery lab teacher in Mississippi. She includes some fabulous resources that are sure to get you excited
about science.
Mrs. Shaw's Human Footprint Unit- Includes activities and resources
used during the lab, lessons that accompany the unit, and websites that enrich the concepts taught. Additionally, she included photos to show how hr students
worked during the unit. Last, she included a fabulous journal.
Very Neat Landforms Websites (PDF List)- Video clips, reader’s theater, and building your own volcano… this is a short but sufficient list of websites that can be used with a variety of students.
This focuses on Earth and Mars, yet it helps us to answer some interesting questions
about where we live. When we compare the geological features of Earth and Mars, we are
putting reading strategies (comparing and contrasting) to use.
Geology of Earth and Mars PowerPoint- I created the presentation, and the pictures from NASA are royalty-free. There should also be
one video from Discovery Education inside.
Moovl- Moovl is an online program that allows users to draw, animate and apply physical properties to objects. Students can discover on their own what happens when they make a ball bouncier, an object heavier, or friction greater. A short video showing Moovl use in the classroom is available at the UK Moovl site.
Rubber Band Propelled Car Experiment- Build a car that goes really far, really fast. Oh, by the way, your power source is a rubber band, and your car can only have two wheels. Start your engines!
FMA Live Interactive Science Show- Find the videos and music in the Teacher's Lounge! You can also possibly schedule for them to come to your school. It is for grades 5 and up, though 4th grade may possibly be able to participate.
Our class was involved in the JASON project for the 2005-2006 school year. The theme of this year-long science unit was "Mysteries of Earth and Mars".
This program was started by Dr. Robert D. Ballard, who first started his quest of exploration when he found the remains of the
Titanic. Here, you can visit many interesting websites about space and geology.
Could you imagine going on a journey through your body? Clicking on the site above will mainly bring you to links, but
during our unit we find out whether cardiac or skeletal muscle is stronger, whether we are eating nutritiously,
put together a model of the integumentary (skin) system, and make a life-size model of the human body to label the bones in our bodies.
Of course there is more, yet we cannot tell you everything just yet!
