These are some interesting links I have located for now (videos, questions, and more). I am not going to entirely re-invent the wheel with this when other teachers have come up with resources about different areas of the United States. However, I have developed some of my own resources- some are already here and many haven't been created as of yet. This may take a long while, but it'll eventually be a fantastic resource for you.

    Books for Grades 3-5-

  • Sienna's Scrapbook- A combination of scrapbook and journal, this refreshing retrospective of African-American history is engaging and entertaining. Sienna is skeptical at best when her parents announce that they will do a tour of black historical sites on their drive from Hartford, CT, to a family reunion in North Carolina. She feels strongly that summer is supposed to be about fun, not about learning! As they visit places such as the Amistad, the Apollo Theater, the homes of Louis Armstrong and Frederick Douglass, the National Air and Space Museum, the Great Blacks in Wax Museum, and the Woolworth's/civil rights museum (plus many more), Sienna includes humorous notes and personal comments, making this scrapbook seem authentic. Her voice is strong and real. The chosen sites are both significant and fascinating. Endnotes include addresses, phone numbers, Web sites, and additional places to visit.
  • The Watsons Go to Birmingham, 1963- Takes places in Flint, Michigan and Birmingham, Alabama. The year is 1963, and self-important Byron Watson is the bane of his younger brother Kenny's existence. Constantly in trouble for one thing or another, from straightening his hair into a "conk" to lighting fires to freezing his lips to the mirror of the new family car, Byron finally pushes his family too far. Before this "official juvenile delinquent" can cut school or steal change one more time, Momma and Dad finally make good on their threat to send him to the deep south to spend the summer with his tiny, strict grandmother. Soon the whole family is packed up, ready to make the drive from Flint, Michigan, straight into one of the most chilling moments in America's history: the burning of the Sixteenth Avenue Baptist Church with four little girls inside.

  • 1607- A New Look at Jamestown (Virginia)
  • Oonawassee Summer by Melissa Forney- Takes place in Florida
  • Hoot by Carl Hiaasen- Takes place in Florida
  • The Misadventures of Maude March- Sallie March, 11, devotee of dime novels, narrates this rollicking Wild West adventure. The irrepressible tomboy and her ladylike older sister, Maude, have been living in Cedar Rapids with their stern Aunt Ruthie since their parents died. When she is shot dead by a random bullet, Reverend Peasley takes the girls in, but works them like servants. Then grandfatherly Mr. Wilburn proposes to Maude, and it's the last straw. The sisters take two horses and head to Independence, MO, in hopes of finding their uncle. They disguise themselves as boys and begin to live as dime-novel heroes, hooking up with Marion Hardly, aka Joe Harden (the Joe Harden, of the dimer series?), who is also their aunt's killer. Although the girls' intentions are never bad, they end up in the midst of a bank robbery and committing murder. The newspapers are full of news of Mad Maude March, gone crazy with grief. All ends well as they make it to Missouri, where everyone has a reputation anyway.
  • The United Tates of America by Paula Danzinger- The family in this book takes a vacation to Plymouth, Massachusetts.
